14 places · 11 free to enter

  1. Cascada del Silencio (Cascada de Chamana)

💧 Waterfall 📍 Baños de Agua Santa Free entry

A cluster of seven small waterfalls dropping about 42 metres and soaking anyone who gets close, tucked into dense green forest that most tourists never reach. Free (sometimes a token dollar is asked, usually no one does), and the trail from Ulba is easy to moderate. Walk about 40 minutes from central Baños or take a short ride; most beautiful in the morning, before the mist rises.

  2. Cascada de Ulba

💧 Waterfall 📍 Baños de Agua Santa Free entry

A waterfall of about 40 metres plunging into a natural pool where, depending on the season and the strength of the flow, you can take a dip (the water is fiercely cold). A quiet local spot on the same trail as the Cascada del Silencio, and usually deserted. Reach it on foot or with a short ride from Baños via Ulba; pair it with the Silencio falls for a morning in nature.

  3. Cascada El Manto de la Novia

💧 Waterfall 📍 Río Verde / Baños Free entry

A delicate, airy waterfall that spreads like a bridal veil down the canyon of the Pastaza river, one of the loveliest sights on the famous waterfall route. You can watch it for free straight from the road (you pay a small sum only to go down to the closer platform). The cheapest and most fun way is to rent a bike in Baños (about US$10 a day) and stop on the way.

  4. Termas de El Salado

♨️ Hot spring 📍 Baños de Agua Santa

Natural, local hot springs set in nature and surrounded by mountains, with hot water flowing straight from a volcanic source. The quiet, authentic alternative to the popular pools in the town centre: there are several pools at different temperatures, and you can jump between the hot water and the cold river right beside them, like a natural ice plunge. Entry is cheap (about US$3–4). Best early in the morning.

  5. Reserva Geobotánica Pululahua – Mirador

⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Calacalí / Quito Free entry

One of only two inhabited volcanic craters in the world: a spectacular view over a huge green caldera with farms and villages inside it. From the car park it is a short climb of about 1.2 km to the viewpoint, and entry is free. If you like, you can walk down the Ventanillas trail to the crater floor. Arrive before noon, because afterwards the mist rises and covers the view. A perfect pairing with a visit to the Equator.

  6. Cascada de Peguche

💧 Waterfall 📍 Otavalo Free entry

A sacred waterfall about 18 metres high in a small protected forest, an important ceremonial site for the Indigenous communities of Otavalo (especially around the Inti Raymi festival in June). Free, with a voluntary token donation of a dollar or two for community upkeep. Walk about half an hour from the edge of town, or take a taxi for a few minutes. A lovely mix of nature and culture near Otavalo's famous market.

  7. Laguna de Cuicocha

🏞️ Lagoon 📍 Cotacachi Free entry

A deep blue-green crater lake at about 3,000 metres with two volcanic islands in the middle, formed by an eruption thousands of years ago. Entry to the viewpoint and the rim trail is free, and the full loop (about 4–5 hours) is one of the finest walks in the northern Andes. You can also settle for a short look from the car park. Easy and cheap to reach by bus plus taxi from Otavalo; clearest in the morning.

  8. Termas de Nangulví

♨️ Hot spring 📍 Apuela (Intag valley)

A community-run hot-spring complex deep in the green Intag valley, with natural mineral pools fed straight from a volcanic source beside a cold river. A remote, little-known gem far from the tourist trail, and very cheap (about US$3 entry). Take a bus from Otavalo's terminal towards Apuela, then a short taxi. Ideal as a stop on a trip into the Intag region.

  9. Mirador Shalalá – Laguna Quilotoa

⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Zumbahua Free entry

A wood-and-glass platform built by the Shalalá community, jutting out over the cliff and giving a different, spectacular view of Quilotoa's turquoise crater lake. Access to the viewpoint itself is free (thanks to a community–government agreement), while regular entry to Quilotoa costs only about US$2. Reached via Zumbahua; a quiet, original alternative to the busy main viewpoint.

  10. Cascada Las Latas

    💧 Waterfall 📍 Tena / Misahuallí

A pleasant jungle trail along a river leading to a powerful waterfall (especially in the rainy season), with several natural pools along the way where you can swim and cool off from the Amazon heat. Entry is very cheap (about US$1.50) and the place is still authentic and uncrowded. Take a bus towards Misahuallí and ask to get off at the trailhead. Bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.

  11. Cascadas de Pimpilala

💧 Waterfall 📍 Tena (Kandu community, Talag) Free entry

A chain of waterfalls (four drops of 10–20 metres) deep in the forest along an enjoyable jungle trail, ending with a dip in the cool water. A hidden, truly Amazonian gem, with free access to the trail; for a tougher adventure (rappelling, climbing) you can hire a local guide at the entrance. Reached from Tena; best in the relatively dry season, so the trails are not too muddy.

  12. Playa Los Frailes

🏖️ Beach 📍 Puerto López Free entry

One of the most beautiful beaches in Ecuador: a crescent bay of pale sand ringed by cliffs, inside a national park, with no bars or hotels. Free (only if you come by private car do you pay about US$2 for parking), and the beach is open Tuesday–Sunday during the day only. A short trail leads through tropical dry forest home to iguanas and monkeys. Bring water, food and sunscreen, because there is nothing there. Reached by taxi or moto-taxi from Puerto López.

  13. La Punta de Montañita

⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Montañita Free entry

The rocky point at the end of Montañita: a free, perfect place for sunsets that paint the sea and sky, and much quieter than the busy main beach. It is also the area's serious surf spot. Just walk about 10 minutes from town along the beach. No fee, no ticket; bring a beer, sit on the rocks and watch the sun sink into the ocean.

  14. Playa de Ayampe

🏖️ Beach 📍 Ayampe Free entry

A wild, long, almost empty beach backed by tropical dry forest, the complete opposite of the parties in nearby Montañita. A small, relaxed fishing village with a consistent break for surfers, fresh food and stunning sunsets. Free, with a sleepy, pleasant atmosphere. Perfect for a few quiet days after the noise. Easy to reach by cheap bus along the coast.
