  1. Cascadas Roberto Barrios

💧 Waterfall 📍 Palenque Free entry

A series of turquoise waterfalls with natural pools and even a natural rock water slide, surrounded by jungle. Far less crowded than famous Agua Azul, with a token entry fee of only about 40 pesos. Reached by cheap colectivo from Palenque; best in the morning, before the groups arrive.

  2. Cascada El Aguacero

    💧 Waterfall 📍 Ocozocoautla

A wild waterfall inside the canyon of the La Venta river, reached by descending about 750 stone steps through the jungle (about 25 minutes). At the bottom you wade through shallow water to the wide fall pouring from the cliff. Cheap entry of about 50 pesos. Most beautiful in the dry season; bring shoes you don't mind getting wet.

  3. El Arcotete

🌿 Nature 📍 San Cristóbal de las Casas Free entry

A huge rock arch with a small river flowing through it, in cool pine forest near San Cristóbal. You can explore a cave system on wooden walkways and look out over the forest from above. A token entry of 10 pesos (plus 15 pesos for the caves). Perfect for a cheap, pleasant nature day away from the city.

  4. Aguas Termales de Agua Caliente

♨️ Hot spring 📍 Cacahoatán (near Tapachula) Free entry

Natural hot springs heated by the geothermal activity of the Tacaná volcano, beside two impressive waterfalls, in a small Indigenous community near the Guatemalan border. A remote, authentic place with almost no tourists, and the income goes directly to local families. Come in a suitable vehicle in the rainy season.

  5. Cenote Zací

    🕳️ Cenote 📍 Valladolid

A beautiful semi-open cenote right in the heart of Valladolid, with no need for a car or taxi. There are changing rooms, toilets and a restaurant, and a nice tip: eat at the restaurant for about 100 pesos and you enter the cenote free. One of the cheapest and most accessible cenotes in the area, perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day.

  6. Cenote Xlakah (Xocén)

🕳️ Cenote 📍 Xocén (near Valladolid) Free entry

A wide open cenote (about 24 metres across) with plant-covered walls and little fish in the water, visited almost only by local families. One of the cheapest and quietest cenotes in Yucatán, far from the tourist crowds. Take a cheap colectivo from Valladolid and enjoy an authentic place.

  7. El Trampolín (Tamasopo)

🌊 River 📍 Tamasopo Free entry

Turquoise natural swimming pools on the river, with jumps into the water and a relaxed local atmosphere. Completely free (just a small tip for the parking attendants), one of the least crowded corners of the Huasteca Potosina. Most beautiful in the dry season between November and January, when the water is especially clear.

  8. Cascadas de Minas Viejas

💧 Waterfall 📍 El Naranjo (Huasteca Potosina)

A tall turquoise waterfall (about 50 metres) with natural pools perfect for swimming and picnics, quiet and with few visitors compared with the area's famous falls. Cheap entry: about 60 pesos per person (plus about 30 pesos for the mandatory life jacket and parking). A peaceful corner for a dip far from the crowds.

  9. Punta Cometa

⛰️ Viewpoint 📍 Mazunte Free entry

A rocky headland jutting into the ocean with one of the most beautiful sunsets on the Oaxaca coast, trails among cacti, and whale watching in season. Entry is almost free (about 10 pesos for park upkeep). Arrive about an hour before sunset to get a good spot on the cliff.

  10. Laguna de Manialtepec

🏞️ Lagoon 📍 Puerto Escondido Free entry

A mangrove-lined lagoon where you can see magical bioluminescence in the water at night: a trail of bluish light with every movement. You can watch from the shore for free, or join a cheap night kayak tour. The peak is between May and October, on dark, moonless nights.

  11. Cascada de Texolo

💧 Waterfall 📍 Xico (Veracruz) Free entry

A spectacular waterfall in dense forest near the enchanting town of Xico, with a viewing bridge and lush greenery all around. Completely free, and the walking trail is easy and accessible. A quiet, lesser-known corner of Veracruz, perfect to combine with a visit to Xico itself.

  12. Playa Balandra

🏖️ Beach 📍 La Paz (Baja California Sur) Free entry

A sheltered bay with shallow turquoise water and white sand, one of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, so flat and clear that you can wade hundreds of metres in waist-deep water. Free (it is a protected reserve), but visitors are limited to 450 per shift, so arrive early in the morning. A paradise for easy snorkelling and for families.

  13. Cascadas Tulimán

    💧 Waterfall 📍 Zacatlán (Puebla)

One of the highest waterfalls in Mexico (almost 300 metres) in green forest, with three areas of suspension bridges, pools and walking trails. Cheap entry of about 100 pesos for the whole park. The descent to the lower area takes about an hour and a half but is worth every step; bring good shoes and water.
